When Is Urgent Care the Right Choice for My Newborn?
A guide to help parents navigate urgent care vs. the ER and feel confident doing it.
You’re a new parent. It’s 5 PM on a Sunday. Your newborn is fussier than usual, feels a little warm, and you’re not sure if this is a ‘wait and see’ moment or a ‘grab the keys right now’ moment. Sound familiar? You’re not alone and knowing the difference between urgent care and the emergency room can save you time, stress, and potentially hours in a waiting room.
Here’s a simple breakdown to help you make the right call.
When to Go to Urgent Care Pediatric urgent care is designed for illnesses and injuries that need prompt attention but aren’t life-threatening. If your newborn or young infant is experiencing any of the following, urgent care is often the right first stop:
Pediatric urgent care centers are staffed by providers who specialize in children’s health. That means faster care, a kid-friendly environment, and providers who know exactly what to look for in little ones.
At After Hours Pediatrics Urgent Care, we see patients from newborns through age 21. Whether it’s your little one’s first fever or a teen with a sprained ankle, our pediatric-trained providers are equipped to care for all your children. We’re open evenings, weekends, and most holidays, so expert care is always within reach.
When to Go Straight to the ER
Some symptoms in newborns and young infants are considered medical emergencies. Don’t wait head to the nearest emergency room or call 911 if your baby shows:
When in doubt with a newborn, especially any baby under 3 months always err on the side of caution. Newborns can decline quickly, and a fever alone in those first weeks is reason enough to go to the ER.
A Special Note About Newborns Under 3 Months
Newborns (babies 0–3 months) have immature immune systems, which means what looks like a “mild” illness can escalate fast. Pediatricians and urgent care providers are trained to treat this age group with extra caution. If your baby is under 3 months and you’re concerned for any reason, it’s always okay to be seen. You will never be judged for being a careful parent.
